Dens meet twice per month. Dens meet independently; there is no single day/time that all dens meet. As this year's den meetings are determined, they will be listed in the Pack and Den calendars.
This school year (2008-2009), Pack 53 is piloting a new advancement program from the National Council called "Fast Tracks on the Advancement Trail". In the previous pilot phase elsewhere in the country, this new program demonstrated great success in retention and advancement while delivering a quality program. This is the final phase of the piloting; if successful, this program will be rolled out nationally to all packs.
In a nutshell, the "Fast Tracks" program provides more structured Den activities and increases the number of advancement activities that are done by the den as a group. Some work at home is still required, but this new program places more of the advancement focus on the Den rather than the Family. The program is designed to give Cubs the opportunity to fulfill the advancement requirements to earn their rank by early spring.
One benefit to Pack 53 is that we may be able to split the Webelos Crossover ceremony and the remaining rank advancements into two different pack meetings. The general consensus has been that the final end-of-year advancement marathon was becoming too long for the boys; this program may help in that regard.
Finally, in packs that have already piloted this program, the yearly retention of Cubs in the pack has increased by an average of 20%. This implies that the boys are having a better time and getting more out of the program... and that's really what Cub Scouting is all about, right?
Pack 53 is very active year round outside of the Den and Pack meetings. We engage in a variety of activites, such as:
